The Magnolia DXer

Parting Words Well with this being my first effort at getting the Magnolia DXer revived I
hope you will be patient with me. This is my first endeavor of this type
and the task is a bit daunting. I hope to have an update quarterly but
that will depend a lot on you. I could use any info you would be willing
to send in. I would specifically like to see us start a series of
feature articles discussing the many tools and techniques of the trade of
DXing. Have you been tinkering with a new piece of software or a new
gadget of some sort that seems to help in the chase. For example for the
last few weeks I have been using several pieces of software put out by Afreet
Software Inc. Some stuff written by Alex VE3NEA. It's several
pieces of software that integrate with each other to form a nicely
working screen full of info such as a world atlas displaying DX cluster spots
with great circle paths from the originator all overlayed with propagation
prediction highlights. Quite interesting. He also has a package
called Faros which computer controls your radio to monitor the various HF
beacons and plots statistics of band openings, long and short path including
the beacon signal to noise ratio. It's quite interesting to note that
there are many band openings that we don't know about but can see graphically
through the use of some software and your rig left running for a few days
doing the work collecting the data. As I gain more experience with all
of this I will be happy to write up a Feature Article for inclusion in a
future edition of The Magnolia DXer. I would encourage you to do the
same. Share what you learn as we make this trek together. I think
it will make the journey much more pleasurable for all of us!
Happy Holidays to you and yours!!!73 and Good DX! Cecil Acuff K5DL
