Welcome

Welcome to the on-line issue of The Magnolia DXer newsletter. 2000 has been a very up and down year for our club. We were all saddened by the loss of our dear friend and member, Lowell Otto, W5NO.  On the upside, we had a highly successful Field Day, a great Spring Picnic, played host to the annual ARRL Day in the Park and had a great DX Dinner Banquet with a top-notch speaker in December. Wes, W3WL gave a very nice presentation on his participation in the Butan A52A DXpedition.

MDXA DXer of the Year

The 2000 MDXA DXer of the Year award was shared this year by Ernie Orman, W5OXA and Glenn Lowery, K2FF. Ernie and Glenn both make significant contributions to our club year in and year out. Ernie has been instrumental in our past two Field Day activities as well as the DXpedition to Dauphin Island in 1999 and the ARRL Day in the Park this year. He has also organized Special Event station W5B during the past two International Lighthouse Weekends, operating from the old Biloxi lighthouse. Glenn has also provided lots of time and energy in our last two Field Day efforts, doing both setup and operating chores. Glenn is always there when someone needs help with a tower/antenna project. And, of course, both are avid DXers, with 300+ countries each. Congratulations to both very deserving recipients.

K5MDX Field Day
K5MDX again participated in Field Day this past year. Members of the MDXA, West Jackson County ARC and Keesler ARC once again joined forces for the event. Forutunatly, mother nature and Murphy cooperated with us better this year and we were able to finish 3rd in the highly competitive 3A category. We were first in Mississippi in ALL categories and finished just out of the Top Ten nationwide. Checkout our score, as well as some photos on the MDXA Field Day web page.

ARRL Day in the Park

The MDXA played host to the annual ARRL Day in the Park this year. The event was held in October at Paul B. Johnson State Park, near Hattiesburg. The event was attended by over 100 hams and their families from around the state. Special thanks to W5OXA, N5WI, K5JZ and KC5LZY for helping to make this event a hugh success.
