Welcome Welcome to the on-line issue of The Magnolia DXer newsletter. 1999 has been a busy year for our club. New members, IOTA Expedition, a first ever K5MDX Field Day event are just a few of the items you will find within. Enjoy!!! Top Stories MDXA DXer of the Year The 1999 recipient of the MDXA DXer of the Year award is Bill Musa, K5YG. Bill has done so much for the club and as a DXer this year it would be difficult to list it all. Just a few of his accomplishments were: Organizing and doing most of the tower/antenna work at the first K5MDX Field Day. It would not have happened without him. DXpedition to the Cayman Islands. Major participant in MDXA IOTA trip to Dauphin Island. Sorter for the W5 Bureau. Over 300 DXCC entities confirmed. Always willing to help a fellow member with tower/antenna work. Congratulations to you Bill, the recognition is well deserved. K5MDX Field Day 1999 marked the first ever participation of K5MDX in Field Day. Members of the MDXA were joined by members of the West Jackson County ARC and Keesler ARC for the event. The weather could not have been much worse. Lighting, high winds and 6-8 inches of rain. It was a real test of our ability to setup and operate under adverse conditions. Many contributed to our success, but we could not have pulled it off without the leadership, guidance and hard work of Bill, K5YG. Dauphin Island IOTA Expedition Another first for our club was the activation of IOTA NA142 from Dauphin Island, AL. Everyone involved had a great time. Special thanks to the expedition organizer, Ernie, W5OXA, who did a great job. We are already talking about doing it again next year during the IOTA contest. Be sure to read the article by Ernie, W5OXA here. Photos can be found at the MDXA Dauphin Island Web Page. MDXA DXCC Honor Roll Members Every year, the MDXA membership adds to the DXCC Honor Roll and this year was no exception. MDXA members who became Honor Rollees this year are Vic, AE5DX (mixed/phone), Gary, W5FI (CW), Igor, US1IDX and Steve, KX5V (phone). Congratulations to these members for this lifetime achievement. New Arrivals Several members welcomed new additions to their families this year. Floyd, N5FG and Sherry became first time grandparents with the birth of Carter Thomas Brantly to daughter Claire and her husband Tom. Vic, AE5DX and Sue also became grandparents this year with the birth of their grandchild Taylor Marie. Glenn, K2FF and Cynthia, KA2EZL started off 1999 with the birth of their third child, Kimberly Dean. Congratulations to all. New Members Welcome to our newest members.
